Excavata

Privacy Policy

How we handle your data and protect your privacy.

Last updated: 9 August 2026

Overview

Excavata is designed with a privacy-first approach. Your excavation data is stored locally on your devices and stays under your control at all times; it never reaches our servers. We collect only the limited account, support, and community information needed to provide the service.

Data Storage

All project data — including contexts, artifacts, samples, photos, and drawings — is stored locally on your device. Synchronisation between devices occurs directly over your local network using peer-to-peer connections. No excavation data is transmitted externally unless you explicitly opt in to cloud backup.

Cloud Backup

If you choose to enable cloud backup, your project data is stored on the third-party cloud service you select (e.g. Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, or WebDAV). Excavata does not operate its own servers — your backups are stored in your own account on these services, governed by their respective privacy policies. You can disable cloud backup at any time and manage or delete your backed-up data directly through your chosen provider.

Account Information

If you create an account, we collect your email address (and your name, if you provide one). We also store your subscription and licence status and, for team use, your organisation and team membership, along with an account identifier. Payments are processed by Stripe — we do not store your card details. This information is used to manage your account, subscription, and team access, and to provide support. We do not sell your personal information or use it for advertising.

Support & Bug Reports

If you send a bug report from within the app, we receive the report text and your email address, an optional screenshot if you attach one, and — only if you leave the diagnostics option enabled — basic technical details such as the app version, platform, operating-system version, and device model. We deliberately do not collect your device's name or any unique device identifier.

Community

If you post in the in-app community, your community profile and posts are stored on our backend and are attributable to you. You can have them removed by deleting your account or by contacting us.

Analytics & Tracking

Excavata does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking. We do not build advertising profiles about you, and no tracking technologies are embedded in the app.

Location Data

Excavata may access your device's GPS to tag photos and records with coordinates. Location data is stored only within your project data on your device and is not transmitted externally unless included in a cloud backup you have enabled.

Third-Party Services & Sub-processors

We use a small number of providers to run the parts of the app that need a backend: Supabase (account authentication, subscription and licence status, bug reports, and community content) and Stripe (payment processing). Cloud backups go to the provider you choose (Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, or WebDAV) under your own account, governed by that provider's privacy policy. When you view a map, tiles are fetched from third-party map services (such as OpenStreetMap or ArcGIS), which see the network request; no excavation data is sent to them. We do not sell or share your data for advertising.

Data Retention

Your local data stays on your device until you delete it. Cloud backups remain in your chosen provider account until you delete them there. Account, subscription, support, and community data held on our backend are retained while your account is active and are removed when you delete your account (see Your Rights). Contact-form submissions are kept only as long as necessary to respond to your enquiry.

Your Rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data at any time. To erase your server-side data, use Settings → Account → Delete Account in the app, which removes your community content, bug-report screenshots, team membership, and your account itself. Your on-device excavation data is removed by resetting or uninstalling the app. For any request, contact us at support@excavata.app.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
